Biography of Bertha von Suttner

Bertha von Suttner, an Austrian writer and pacifist, was born in Prague in 1843. She grew up in various European cities and spoke multiple languages fluently. After facing financial difficulties, she worked as a governess and later married Baron Arthur von Suttner.

Living in Russia, Bertha developed an interest in politics and social issues. She began writing and co-authored novels with her husband. Returning to Vienna, her works addressed freethinking, democracy, and the horrors of war.

Inspired by her experiences, Bertha became an active advocate for peace. Her novel “Lay Down Your Arms” gained significant attention, leading her to establish pacifist organizations and participate in peace conferences across Europe.

Recognized for her efforts, Bertha von Suttner was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1905. She continued her peace work after her husband’s death and passed away in 1914, leaving a legacy of advocating for international peace.
