Biography of Gregor Mendel
Gregor Mendel, a botanist, scientist, and religious figure, was born in 1822 in Austria. Raised in modest circumstances, Mendel had a strong passion for learning from a young age.
Choosing to become a monk due to financial constraints, Mendel joined the Augustinian monastery in Brno. Supported by the monastery, he furthered his education and became a priest.
Attending the University of Vienna, Mendel expanded his knowledge in mathematics and natural sciences. This laid the groundwork for his groundbreaking experiments on plant hybridization.
After seven years of careful research on peas, Mendel presented his findings on inheritance patterns in hybrid offspring. Although initially overlooked, his work later became the foundation of genetics.
In 1868, Mendel became the abbot of the monastery, focusing more on religious duties. Despite this, his scientific legacy lives on in the Mendel Museum.
